Scientific name: Bertholletia excelsa
Origin: Brazil, Amazon region
Plant characteristics: Large tree that can reach 50m in height and 2m in diameter, at the base. Straight trunk, branching out only in the upper part. Dark and crackled bark. Dark green leaves, undulate and shiny. Yellowish-white flowers, aromatic, appearing from November to February.
Fruit: Characteristically a spherical capsule, with a thick and hard surface dark brown in color. When mature, the capsule releases seeds through the lower portion. Each capsule contains between 14 and 24 seeds inside, surrounded by yellow pulp. Mature from December to March.
Types: In Shell: 80/100 ; 60/70, 57/65, 45/50 , 40/45, 35/40.
Shelled: midget, medium, large, chipped and broken
Packaging: In Shell: new jute bags (25 liquid kg and/or 50 liquid kg).
Shelled: In foil vacuum pack, 20 liquid Kg, and then packed in cardboard boxes, export grade.
Uses: in food production industry, such as chocolate, cereal bars, cookies, sweets, cakes, and in “mixed nuts” products.
